New Footstool Triggers code: COMPLETE! (v2 Final)

It's finished! Glitch has completed the "New Footstool Triggers" code I requested. Now you can footstool with ease, using convenient new buttons -- and you don't have to worry about wasting your midair jump(s) if you miss! You can still footstool via any "Jump" input too, unless that's been disabled, like in Project M.

You may now configure the following buttons to footstool, by mapping them as "Up Taunt":

Additional New Footstool Triggers added in Version 2 Final!

These new footstool triggers function just like you'd expect, except they differ in a few minor ways:

1.) Normally, when you do a regular footstool via a "Jump" input, you can choose how high you go. Hold down the "Jump" button (or Up on the Control Stick, if using Tap Jump) to go higher, or just tap to go lower. The difference between high and low diminishes with each successive footstool until you land. When you footstool via one of these new triggers, you will always hop the lower height unless you tap Up on the Control Stick right as you start the footstool (this works even if Tap Jump is off). Holding down the new footstool button will not make you jump higher.

2.) Since footstools are easier to land now that you don't have to worry about missing and wasting your second jump, it might feel like you're "homing in" on opponents' heads. This is not the case, however; Buffer is what makes this impression. Once you press one of the new footstool buttons, you have ten frames (or 1/6 of a second; vBrawl and Minus standard Buffer) to position yourself above your foe's head.

3.) In Brawl Minus, Mario and Luigi have very powerful footstools. Normally, they cannot execute a "short" footstool; they are forced to leap up to maximum height when they land a footstool via a regular "Jump" input. However, footstooling via one of these new triggers makes them hop the minimum height by default. This code will in effect buff the Mario Bros. slightly in Minus, as they will be able to drop back down on opponents they footstool a bit faster, and follow up with a strong move. One unusual note about Mario: He can cancel FireBrand on-hit into a normal "Jump" footstool, but not into a New Trigger footstool. Other characters who can cancel moves into footstools can cancel into either variety.

I've tested this code thoroughly, and I think we've got it 100% operational and bug-free -- but let us know if you encounter anything odd that may be connected to using it.

Remember to map your desired new footstool input(s) as "Up Taunt" in "Options" > "Controls", or the new trigger(s) will not work! This means that if you already use one of the new trigger buttons for another purpose, you may continue using that button as you like, as long as you do not map it as "Up Taunt". Also, don't forget that your loader's code Hook Type must be set to "AXNextFrame".

How to use this code:
Download and set up any version of Brawl Minus on your SD card. Get the latest version of Minus here.

Attached to this post is a copy of the RSBE01.gct from Brawl Minus MAX 3.3 with only this code modified. A copy of the edited Brawl Minus MAX 3.3 codeset text file is also included.

Simply rename the RSBE01.gct already in your "codes" folder and place the new one in there with it. Save the original -- you'll need it if you want to play online with someone who is not using this modified codeset.

Want to use this code, but you're running an older version of Minus?
If you have a .txt file that lists all the codes in your current RSBE01.gct...
- Open up that text file with Notepad.
- Copy and Paste the New Footstool Triggers code at the bottom. Save.
- Open that file with Code Manager.
- Confirm the new code is on, then Export to a new RSBE01.gct.
- Put that file in your codes folder. Rename and keep the old one.

If you do not have a .txt file that lists all the codes in your current RSBE01.gct...
- Open up your RSBE01.gct with GCTEdit.
- Copy and Paste the New Footstool Triggers code into the Add Code box.
- Remove all spaces and line breaks from the code, until it is a single, continuous line.

Also, I might consider using this in my own build, but if the devs don't want it, I don't. I try to maintain the integrity of the game by keeping it as vanilla minus as possible. They may want it to be hard to footstool or something.

How do you load Minus? I use CFG Loader, so I had to change the Hook Type in Game Options.

Glitch said this currently isn't necessary if you use Stack Smash to load Minus.

Send this code to the Project M team - I can't land footstools worth **** in that game (used to hitting jump for it), and this would help [if they implement it].

Plus they'd probably bug-check it and get back to us if there's an issue - just tell them it's a prototype or something.

You need 1 SD card for each mod you want to play if you're not hacking your Wii, and one if you have regular Brawl stuff you want (ex: custom stages you want to be able to access in regular Brawl). As a result, I have 3 - one for Brawl-, one for Project M, and one for my regular Brawl stuff (I play that game although fewer and fewer people seem to these days...).

Hmm. I've tested this code a good bit today, and it looks like it needs a little more work.

Main problems are that it only works for Player 1, and then only if P1 is using a Gamecube controller.

Assuming you use a Gamecube controller, you can now footstool by pressing "X", "L", or "DPad Up". However, in order for "X" or "L" to footstool, you will need to map them as "Up Taunt" in "Options" > "Controls" in the main menu. Of course, "DPad Up" is mapped as "Up Taunt" by default, so you don't need to remap that one.

You got it. It's practically impossible to press Up on the Control Stick to get the extra height if you're using "DPad Up" to footstool; your left thumb can't make it up there in time. Using "X" or "Y" to footstool works much better -- the "DPad Up" option is mostly there for people used to it from Project M.

I vote this code for Brawl- 3.4 (or whatever it will be called).

I feel like if this code is implemented, the devs could easily turn that into a regular footstool for the bros instead of the strong one.

No other issues that I know of. I did notice that some characters are much better at footstooling, and can footstool more times before landing, than others.

I wouldn't call the Mario Bros. "new trigger" footstools weaker, unless you just mean shorter default jump height by that. They can actually choose which height they want to go via new trigger, whereas they can only go up high via regular footstool. Also, the damage and knockback is the same for both types of footstool.

That is what I meant. It's not that much better at all, but in there case, I do feel that the damaging footstool should be harder to do than a normal one, so the new input should just be a regular footstool IMO.

That's unusual. Are you left-handed? I could add a few lines to the code that would make Y and R New Footstool Triggers too, but using them online would desync you unless the other players have them active in their codeset too. Still want me to add them?

Have you tried using Tap Jump or Y to jump? Using Y is nice because you don't have to move your thumb horizontally like you do with X; just use the tip of it to jump and the joint to use A. Makes short-hopped aerials easy too.

That's actually based on the playstyle of every player. I also use X to jump, and can pull off pretty much everything just fine like that, so I'd never use the footstool on X.

Not that I ever try to footstool people on purpose to begin with. XD

Indeed, I am left handed, but I don't actually think that's the reason why I use X/L the way I do though. X was just an arbitrary choice, but I use L so that I don't have to coordinate between my left thumb and right index finger to roll. I have tried Y, and it's pretty much just the same as X. I just stick to X because of muscle memory.

All of this is pretty much irrelevant though, as Gold_TSG proves, players other than me also use these buttons so I think it'd be nice to have in. Might as well put it in the code and have the devs put it in the next release.

I've attached a modified Brawl Minus 3.5 .GCT file and .TXT file (with only this code modified) to this post. Replace the default 3.5 files in your CODES folder with these. If you're using a custom setup, just add the code I posted above to your RSBE01.TXT, and export a new RSBE01.GCT out of it using Code Manager.

Let me know if you have any problems with this. I'll test it myself when I can, and I'll update the first post soon.

Add to your Marth game? If you do, against at least some characters that's a guaranteed tipper dair thanks to buffering and how footstools work.

I am left-handed, but use R to shield/dodge and X to jump. I'm trying to use Y more and use L for all shielding (this is also to make wavedashing OoS easier in Melee, and because I feel like I can do more OoS when I shield with L, even though that's blatantly false).

Awesome! I actually already have taunts mapped to l and r on my classic controller pro so I can do ultra taunts better, though I stopped doing ultra taunts really.

But yeah, I use x to jump and y to grab. Feels so much better than ever when grabbing with y!

I have to use zl and zr for shielding cus the pro is really weird. Those buttons are bigger buttons like regular l and r, but l and r on the pro are small buttons sized like z, even placed like z.
